Next day we were up for another hike. A shorter one this time. We walked into Lauterbrunnen and took the funicular up to Grutschalp. We hiked in the direction of Murren (a car-free alpine village), but stopped at Winteregg after about 30 mins. We were beginning to feel the press of time as we had to pack out in a few hours. The most compelling reason to stop was the Bergrestaurant Winteregg. This short trip would be perfect for a family with smaller children. The funicular ride is bound to amaze (a bargain at 14.8Sfr rd trip / adult), and there is a playground for the kids, while the parents recuperate on the fenced sun terrace with a spectacular view. We got beer, and saw something truly amazing - an avalanche on the Monch across the valley! What a sight to treasure, and the noise was just awesome! We were very happy we saw it from our vantage point, and not from the path of the snow!

After our hike back to the station and the final funicular ride down to Lauterbrunnen, it WAS time for lunch. We decided we deserved a good meal, so we stopped at the Hotel Oberland. The food was good here. For about 33Sfr Jeff and I had a schnitzel cordon bleu with pommes, an order of rosti (regional fried potato dish - yum), salad and iced tea. This is a pretty fair price for lunch out in Switzerland. They served other local specialties, too, such as the raclette fondue, and fresh fish.
We hated to leave, but it was time to go home. We were consoled by the thought that we can come again soon. It's only 5 hours from home (in Germany)! We just love Europe and we are absolutely PASSIONATE about Switzerland. We hope you'll make an opportunity to go, too!
